Best Plant Based Things to Do in Austin, Texas

We have had the pleasure of living for extended periods of times in multiple cities and countries. Currently, we are spending most of our time in Austin, Texas - a city known for its vibrant music scene, outdoor activities, and plant based food trucks.

Because most of our time here is during the pandemic, we have spent most of our time experiencing the outdoor activities and the incredible plant based food scene. Below are our favorites things to do in Austin, Texas for plant-based folks who love the outdoors.

Eat Brunch at The Beer Plant

The Beer Plant is Austin’s first plant-based gastropub, combining elevated vegan food with craft beer, win, and cocktails. We eat plant based food all over the country, and The Beer Plant is hands down the best brunch we’ve ever had. Some of their fan favorites are the chicken and waffles and the honey butter chicken sandwich. Sensing a theme? We don’t usually enjoy plant based chicken, but we scarfed this down and ordered another plate of it. Add the house-made buffalo sauce if you like an extra kick.

We also ordered the following:

  • Tarrytown Scramble, a tofu-based scramble with Beyond Sausage (our favorite), crimini, poblano peppers, onions, and kale

  • Patty Melt, a cheesy, house burger patty on Texas toast

  • Everything Bagel with Dill Cream Cheese

Come with friends so you can try a little bit of everything! They also have outdoor seating in the breezeway.

Hike With Peacocks at Mayfield Park

Peacock

Somehow we lived in Austin for a full year and no one mentioned that you could HIKE WITH PEACOCKS. This 27 acre park, located at 3505 W 35th St, Austin TX 78703 is 10 minutes from downtown and is free. There are miles of well-shaded hiking trails along the river, and there is a park that is home to at least ten striking peacocks. We were lucky enough to see peacocks in Spanish gardens during my brother’s Spanish wedding, but never thought we’d see this in Texas! A great place to hike and hang out!

Note: Pets are not allowed, so leave them at home!

Eat a Plant Based Burger at Plow Burger, PlowBao or PlowBQ

Have you heard of the famous Franklin Barbecue in Austin? People stand in lines for hours to eat their Barbecue, and luckily for the animals (and for us!) one of their former cooks opened several plant based barbecue and burger trucks.

Plow Burger has a rotating variety of plant based burgers that are to die for. We have probably eaten fifty of them since we moved here, and they are the reason we started our Instagram @BeyondMeatLove.

PlowBQ is located outside one of the Buzzmill coffee locations and yall - this plant based BBQ is out of this world. I mean - look a the picture above. You get a full, Texas sized BBQ plate with two creamy sides (we usually get the creamed corn and the mac & cheese) for less than $15.

Plow Bao is the third truck in the Plow food truck family. They offer plant based bao, dim sum, and dumplings. They also rotate new options in weekly to try!
